What is CBT?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most effective and widely practiced approaches in modern psychotherapy. It is proven to support people struggling with depression, anxiety, PTSD, and complex PTSD, but its value extends far beyond diagnosed conditions. CBT can also help anyone who wants to manage stress, build resilience, and improve emotional well-being in everyday life.
What makes my approach different is that I work closely with the nervous system as a foundation for healing. For clients who experience trauma, anxiety disorders, PTSD, or complex PTSD, this step is absolutely crucial. When the nervous system is in survival mode, no amount of positive thinking or action planning will truly create change. That’s why we begin with nervous system regulation, calming the body’s stress responses and restoring balance. This creates a safe and steady platform for trauma healing and allows the deeper work of therapy to unfold.
From there, we integrate the powerful tools of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Through trauma-informed CBT techniques, structured exercises, and personalised strategies, you learn to identify and shift negative thought patterns, regulate emotions more effectively, and make intentional choices in daily life. This combined approach, somatic nervous system work and CBT, addresses both the body and the mind, ensuring that progress is not only meaningful but also sustainable.
In my practice, I also bring in cutting-edge research on neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to rewire and adapt. By mixing science into our sessions, you gain a deeper understanding of how to create lasting neural pathways that support calm, resilience, and healthier relationships.
Each session is thoughtfully designed to build upon the last, combining structure with creativity. The result is a therapeutic process that helps you not only manage current challenges but also expand your long-term capacity for emotional stability, trauma recovery, and a high-quality life.
A safe space to relax
Update from 10th of May -31st of October 2025: I will be relocating temporarily to Spain . During my time in Spain, I plan to return to Malta for a few weeks in July, and I will make every effort to arrange in-person sessions during these visits. However, I am pleased to offer the option to continue for sessions online.
“I am so happy that I found Maria as my therapist. She has helped me manage my anxiety in a completely new way. Have tried many different methods and therapists before, but her working methods are the best I have experienced. In addition, she has a fantastic personality where you feel safe and not judged. I highly recommend Maria”
